Heavy Without Alternatives

One can often encounter brainstorms about how individual vehicles or even entire tank building schools ought to have evolved. Most of these brainstorms are done by people that are far removed from the field of history, but sometimes even notorious historians take part in this exercise. Among Soviet tanks, the T-28 is a popular character in alternative history. Modern improvements to this tank know no bounds, but the fact that the T-28 was replaced by the KV-1 and not the T-34 is often ignored, as is the fact that a replacement for the T-28 by the name of T-29 already existed.

The IS-85 heavy tank was accepted into service with the Red Army on September 4th, 1943. This was the finale of the program aimed at developing a successor to the KV. One can often hear claims that if the KV remained in production and was modernized then it could be made into a heavy tank that was no worse than the IS-85. You may laugh, but these claims were not just made by alternative historians. Attempts to preserve the KV-85 were made at the highest levels, even in 1944. Nevertheless, the KV had to make room on the assembly line for its successor. Read on to find out why this happened and why there was no alternative to the IS tank.

KV's Replacements

I report the status of the work on the T-150 and T-220 tanks at the Kirov factory as of January 28th, 1941. The T-150 and T-220 tanks are still not ready for trials and have not been presented to the commission.

T-150 tank:

After replacing the engine that broke during factory breaking in on January 21st, 1941, the tank has still not been returned to a condition suitable for QA and Military Representative approval.
The gun mantlet design is unrefined and allows a gun depression of only 3 degrees as opposed to 6.5 degrees on blueprints.

T-220 tank:

The engine broke during factory breaking-in on January 25th, 1941. The experimental main bearings melted.
Presently, a new experimental engine is being installed on the tank. Chief Engineer of factory #75 comrade Chupakhin, currently at the Kirov factory, cannot vouch that the engines installed in T-150 and T-220 tanks will work.
Your decision is needed in equipping the T-150 and T-220 tanks with refined engines.

The T-150 and T-220 tanks were weighed on January 25th.
The combat weight of the T-150 is 50 tons 160 kg.
The combat weight of the T-220 is 62 tons 700 kg.

The GABTU's tactical-technical requirements give a limit of 48 tons for the T-150 and 56 tons for the T-220. I ask for your directions on whether or not it is sensible to put the T-150 and T-220 tanks through proving grounds trials if they do not meet the GABTU's requirements."

Big Gun for a Small Turret

In June of 1940, the Red Army GABTU began working on modernizing the KV-1 heavy tank. Even though production had not yet fully began, the military already had issues with the tank. This is a fairly ordinary scenario, especially considering the fact that tank development sped up with the start of WWII. According to the GABTU, the KV-1 needed more armour and, more importantly, a more powerful gun. It's hard to argue with the latter, since the Red Army's heavy and medium tanks, KV-1 and T-34, ended up with the same gun.

KV Gun Upgrades

"The following work is necessary to perform trials of KV tank armament and improvement of blueprints:
  1. Install the F-34 gun instead of the F-32 gun into the KV-1 tank at factory #92 by March 1st, 1941.
    A commission composed of representatives from ChTZ, the Kirov factory, GABTU, and GAU must perform trials and approve blueprints by March 5th, 1941. Factory #92 received a KV tank with a 76 mm F-32 gun on February 2nd, 1941.
  2. Install the 107 mm F-42 gun instead of the M-10 gun into the KV-2 tank by May 1st, 1941. Perform trials and work on blueprints, presenting them to the NKO no later than May 15th, 1941. Factory #92 received a KV tank with a large turret on January 29th.

Kirov Experiments, June 1941

Object 220 (KV-3 base)

As of June 20th, the tank traveled 1979 km in total, 584 km after reassembly. The 850 hp V-2SN engine #2(1193-03) installed on May 30th worked for 27 h. 21 m. During trials, the following defects were discovered:
  1. 3 sets of exhaust collectors burned up over the course of 284 km.
  2. 4 final drive ferodo ribbons burned up. Cause: improper installation and adjustment.

Kirov Factory Prototypes, March 1941

"Report on the progress of experimental tank armament work from February 20th to March 20th, 1941

The experimental prototype is awaiting the arrival of the V-5 engine from the subcontractor factory. Assembly of the second prototype has not started due to a lack of finished parts. The factory already began producing parts for the second prototype. The parts are in the initial stages of mechanical production. Since the plants are highly loaded with mass production parts, it is likely that the full set of parts for the prototype will not be finished in March. The turret for the second prototype is currently at factory #92, where designers from both factories are working on installation of the gun and combat equipment.

Heavy Tank Costs

Following decrees issued by the Government, the Kirov factory is building a series of experimental vehicles without having any contracts for them. Letter #6109 sent on November 15th, 1940, asked you to send these contracts. Letter #2239/s sent on February 20th, 1941, repeated the request. Nevertheless, we have not received any contracts from you.

I am sending you a report of the approximate cost of experimental works performed by the Kirov factory in 1941 regarding Objects ##150, 220, 221, 212, and KV-3, for the sum of 5,350,000 rubles in total. Please send us the information to issue bills regarding these projects.

Radio Network of the 31st Independent Guards Breakthrough Tank Regiment

Radio communication is an important part of combined arms warfare. Despite popular belief, the Red Army paid extensive attention to this issue, as shown by radio networks such as this one.


At the very top, you have the aircraft communications center, with the appropriate callsign Sky. On the left, the officers' radio net (Method from 30th Guards Tank Brigade, Turret from 13th Air Army, Lamp, the chief of the Motorized and Armoured forces, Concrete from 220nd Tank Brigade, and Bomb from 46th Guards Tank Regiment). On the right, "tank unit #10" radio net, listing all the tank units so far plus 30th Guards Infantry Corps, 46th Breakthrough Tank Regiment, 205th Tank Regiment, and 98th Tank Regiment.

Then, on the bottom, the vehicles of the regiment's contacts. The text on the right side explains how to read the diagram. Token and Page are allowed to communicate on any network. If contacted by them, one must answer immediately. The callsigns of the company commanders are repeated, just in case.

"Minor Modernization": T-150

The heavy KV tank, accepted into service on December 19th, 1939, was the best tank in its class. Over the course of two years,  no other country could build anything like it, and the Tiger, the first proper answer to the KV, appeared on the front lines only in the fall of 1942. However, it's well known that the development of new vehicles never stops, as the military's appetites only grow. Therefore, further modernization of the KV was only a matter of time. The T-150 was the more reasonable attempt at improving the characteristics of the Soviet heavy tank.

Better, thicker, stronger

The idea that the KV was in need of improvement was announced in the spring of 1940. The KV was accepted into service with the F-32 gun, but its production was delayed, and the KV was armed with the L-11 gun until January of 1941. Even though the F-32 was a superior design, there was not much difference between the two.

Both guns were based on the 76 mm Lender AA gun mod. 1914/15 with slightly improved muzzle velocity (613 m/s from 592 m/s). On one hand, the characteristics of the L-11 were satisfactory. It could penetrate 43 mm at 1000 meters at an angle of 43 degrees. On the other hand, with 75 mm of armour, a KV tank could not destroy a tank similar to itself. Additionally, a tank gun based on the Lender gun was already designed at the Kirov factory back in 1935, indexed L-7, and work did not progress past the experimental stage. Finally, the T-34 also used the L-11, and the situation where a heavy and a medium tank have the same gun was considered unacceptable.

A reasonable conclusion was to improve the tank armament. The first point in a list of such suggestions dated July 11th, 1940, mentions the KV. According to this list, the tank needs to have a 76 mm gun with a muzzle velocity of 800 m.s to penetrate 70-80 mm of armour. The most suitable gun was the 76 mm mod. 1931 AA gun (3-K). The same proposal suggested increasing the tank's armour to 90-100 mm. The request for a new gun was issued on June 21st, 1940, in a list of tank, SPG, and AT guns in development. It was listed as "76 mm tank gun mounted in the small turret KV tank". Factory #92 was listed as the developer and the due date was September 1st, 1940.

On July 17th, 1940 (other documents list the date as June 14th), decree #128-495ss of the Council of Commissars was issued, describing the production of modernized KV tanks as well as SPGs on its chassis. According to the decree, 4 prototypes of the KV will be built. Initially, they were to differ in armament and armour. Two prototypes would have 90 mm of armour, and two 100 mm. Two tanks (one with 90 mm and one with 100 mm of armour) would receive 76 mm guns with 3-K AA gun ballistics, another two would receive 85 mm guns with 52-K AA gun ballistics, also developed by factory #92.

Work began, and some details surfaced that forced Kirov factory to redo a part of the projects. The 85 mm F-30 gun was too big for the stock KV-1 turret. As a result, three of the four tanks were radically changed. Two of them are better known as the T-220. According to the project, their mass was supposed to be 56 tons, but ended up at 62.7 tons.

The second prototype of the tank suffered the most changes. The vehicle was indexed T-221, or Object 221. It was a KV-1 with 90 mm of armour, lengthened like the T-220. The tank would likely receive an enlarged turret, as it was going to be equipped with an 85 mm gun. In February of 1941, parts of the T-221's hull arrived from the Izhor factory. In a letter written in February of 1941, Marshal Kulik proposed using the 76 mm gun with 3-K ballistics, but this never happened. As a result, the T-221's hull served as a base for the KV-3 (factory index Object 223), which was also never finished.

Factory #92 assigned the index F-27 to the 76 mm gun with 3-K ballistics. Thanks to parts commonality, there were few problems with its design. By September 2nd, 1940, the gun was installed in a T-28 and made its first 122 shots. By September 24th, the F-27 made 600 shots, and defects were discovered in the recoil system. The gun, according to reports, showed satisfactory precision. Due to improvements of the components, trials were put on pause. Assembly of a second prototype using F-34 parts began. A T-28 with an F-27 was prepared for shipment to the ANIOP (an artillery proving grounds near Mulino), but this never happened.

Practice Try

According to plans, the first KV with a 76 mm gun and 90 mm of armour was supposed to be ready by November 1st, 1940. Due to delays with the F-27, the gun was changed, and the T-150 was equipped with an F-32 gun. This tank was also called KV-150 and Object 150 in letters. Due to delays caused by Izhor factory only shipping the hull and turret of the T-150 on November 1st, 1940, the due date was missed. The vehicle was only assembled in December. It was meant to weigh 48 tons, but weighing of the prototype showed that it weighed 50,160 kg. Overall, the budget for the project was 1.5 million roubles (without armament), or a little less than three KV-1s.

The new tank was very similar to the KV-1. Externally, the tank differed by using an F-32 gun (mass production KVs started using it in January 1941) and a commander's cupola, positioned to the right of the turret. The cupola had 6 prismatic periscopes, as well as a rotating PTK periscope. Additionally, the T-150 had an improved rear DT machinegun ball.

This cupola position was temporary and not according to requirements. A new cupola was designed in November of 1940, which was similar to the cupola used in the PzIII. This is not surprising, as the tank was purchased from Germany and closely studied at all tank factories. A similar cupola, sans the rotating periscope, was used in the T-50 light tank, designed by the Kirov factory. In the T-150 turret that was built, the cupola was to the right of the gun. In the redesigned version, the commander and his cupola moved to the left. Judging by the cupola design, it would not have a hatch.

In addition to the armament and cupola, the T-150 had 90 mm of armour. Due to the increased mass, factory #75 (Kharkov) developed a supercharged version of the V-2 known as the V-5. The engine was boosted to 700 hp, but this change brought reliability problems with it.

According to NKO order #010/19s issued on January 14th, 1941, trials started on the next day. Gunnery and mobility trials were held and crew working conditions were studied. The commander's cupola came under criticism.

First, due to the small vertical viewing angle, the vision blocks were deemed insufficient. Second, it was only possible to use the cupola while standing, which was difficult to do on the move, especially in battle. Thirdly, the commander was tasked with reloading the coaxial machinegun. Finally, the commander's position made the loader's job difficult. The conclusion was obvious: move the commander's cupola along with the commander, as was done in the November 1940 project.

Gunnery trials showed that the precision of the gun was satisfactory. There was, however, a small nuance. Due to the untested gun mantlet, the gun depression was only -3 degrees instead of -6.5. The rate of fire trials were also troubling. On one hand, the rate of fire reached 5-7 RPM, on the other hand, this was only when the loader used the most convenient racks. When the racks on the left side of the tank were used, the rate of fire dropped to 3 RPM.

The biggest problem, however, was caused by mobility trials. During factory trials on January 21st, 1941, after 199 km, the engine broke down. The first few kilometers showed that the tank cannot use the third or fourth gear on a highway, as the oil overheated even when the temperature was -12 degrees. The tank could only drive normally in second gear. As of February 21st, 1941, the tank was still under maintenance: the cooling system was being redesigned. Following GABTU's proposal, trials were paused on March 1st.

Optimization

Despite a whole series of problems with the T-150, the overall direction of the work was considered correct. As the planned changes were deemed minor, the tank was given a green light. Council of Commissars decree #548-232ss issued on March 1941 ordered the Kirov factory to begin production of the KV-3. This is the index under which the T-150 would enter service. The improved version of the tank, documentation for which started development on March 16th, was indexed Object 222. This vehicle was similar to the T-150, but had an improved commander's cupola and a 76 mm F-34 gun.

The F-34 was not a final choice. GAU and GABTU were still eyeing the F-27 with its higher penetration. It was proposed that the new gun, indexed ZiS-5 in the winter of 1941, would be tested in the T-221 when it was finished. Additionally, the Kirov factory was working on its own high power tank gun.

This gun, indexed 413, was an F-32 converted to use a 57 mm barrel. Judging by the 4160 mm long barrel, Kirov factory created a tank version of the ZiS-2 gun, which was being developed by factory #92 at the time. Maximum unification with the F-32 allowed for rapid production of the gun which, most importantly, preserved the existing mount. At 1000 meters, the 413 would penetrate 84 mm of armour. In comparison, the 76 mm AA gun penetrated 70 mm of armour at 30 degrees at that range.

GAU gave an unclear answer to the 413 project on March 3rd, 1941. On one hand, the project was interesting due to its unification with the F-32. Most blueprints were done and even some parts were made. GAU proposed that the 413 be finished... but on Kirov factory's dime. The project was initiated by the factory, and GAU had no budget for it. In the end, the 57 mm tank gun project was sent to the archives.

Overshadowed by Younger Siblings

Clouds gathered over the KV-3 literally a week after production started. Military intelligence received word of German heavy tanks. The KV-3 instantly became unsatisfactory, and a new more powerful tank was ordered. It was also called KV-3, but was based on the T-220. The decision to start development of this tank, indexed Object 223, was made on April 7th, 1941.

GABTU reacted negatively to the 223 project. Yakov Nikolayevich Fedorenko, chief of GAU, sensed trouble. The T-220, T-150's older brother, killed two engines over a week of trials, and now there was a tank that weighed not 62.5, but almost 70 tons! The questions of how this monster was supposed t be transported and towed remained without an answer. On April 25th, 1941, Lieutenant-General Fedorenko proposed to cancel the 68 ton 223 and to increase the armour and armament of the 222 instead. The 54-55 ton tank would have 120 mm of front armour and a ZiS-5 gun. His proposal was rejected.

The proposed 68 ton KV-3 did not mean that lighter tanks were completely done for. On June 19th, 1941, Marshal Kulik proposed the production of a tank equal to the 222 under the index KV-6. A portion of the documentation on the T-220 was sent to Chelyabinsk. In addition, some solutions from the T-150 and T-220 migrated to production KV-1s, especially the armour.

Simultaneously with the decision to develop the 223, applique armour was added to existing KV-1s. Starting in July of 1941, the KV-1's armour was almost as thick as the T-150's. In order to test out KV-1 modernizations, the T-150 returned to testing grounds in the spring of 1941. By June 20th, 1941, the tank travelled 2237 km. The F-34 gun also eventually made it to the KV-1. It was installed in Chelyabinsk production tanks starting in the fall of 1941.

Long Living Frontliner

The start of the Great Patriotic War on June 22nd put an end to any ideas about producing the KV-6. In the end of 1941, the idea of using an 85 mm gun and a 700 hp engine appeared at ChTZ, but by early 1942 it was clear that the KV-1 does not need more weight from armament and armour, but less weight for improved maneuverability and reliability.

The fate of the T-150 was more complex than of its brothers, the T-220-1 and T-220-2. On October 11th, 1941, the tank was sent to the 123rd Tank Brigade. The T-150 is listed last in the list of tank sent from the Kirov factory, even though the last tank was sent on October 19th. As this tank was almost identical to other KV-1s (the brigade only received late KV-1s with 90 mm of armour), it is not listed in brigade documents separately.

The brigade had other exotic vehicles. In early January of 1942, U-9 was written off near Ust-Tosno, one of the KV tanks from the initial batch. An even earlier vehicle, the U-5, was received on January 12th, 1942. This tank fought in many places, ending up in the 260th Guards Heavy Tank Regiment in 1944. As for the T-150, it does not appear in the brigade's documents, but in the 31st Guards Heavy Tank Regiment the tank suddenly appears as an irreparable loss. This happened on May 18th, 1943.

The T-150's career did not end here. The tank was sent to factory #371, where it underwent major repairs. In July of 1943, the T-150 returned to the 31st Guards Heavy Tank Regiment. Its commander was Junior Lieutenant I.A. Kuksin. The tank had the turret number 220. According to the regiment's radio diagram, tank #220 had the callsign "Som" (Catfish).

On July 12th, 1943, the regiment concentrated in Maryino village in Leningrad oblast. On July 22nd, the regiment, along with the 63rd Guards Infantry Division, moved out to attack. 4th Company fought over the Arbuzovo settlement. During battles from July 22nd, to August 1943, tankers from the 31st Guards Heavy Tank Regiment claimed 10 tanks (5 Tigers, 3 PzIVs, and 2 PzIIIs), 12 pillboxes, 34 dugouts, and about 750 German soldiers and officers. The ferocity of battles can be seen in that 19 of the regiment's 21 tanks were damaged and evacuated from the battlefield, 6 of them twice. 7 tanks were repaired on the battlefield, another 13 by a repair base.

Kuksin's crew distinguished themselves. The T-150's crew claimed 5 dugouts, 2 light machineguns, and 36 soldiers and officers. During battle, the tank's track was knocked off. Under enemy fire, #220's crew repaired the track and continued to pursue enemy infantry. After that, Guards Jr. Lieutenant Kuksin's tank held a defensive line for 4 days. For this, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star.

On August 12th, 1943, the regiment was assigned to the 73rd Marine Brigade. 4th Company was tasked with attacking the Annenskoye settlement, capture the south-east outskirts, and allow infantry to reach the north shore of the Moika river. At 4:55 in the morning on August 18th, 1st and 4th Companies went on the offensive. By 6:00, 9 out of 10 tanks were knocked out. Only tank #206 from 1st Company commanded by Guards Senior Lieutenant I.P. Mikheev remained. The infantry suffered serious losses during the attack and did not achieve their objectives.

Sadly, during battles over Annenskoye on August 18th, I.A. Kuksin died. With him died his drive, Guards Technical Lieutenant M.I. Shinalskiy, and gunner, Guards Senior Sergeant A.S. Yurdin. As for the T-150, it was not listed among the irrecoverable losses. At the end of August 1943, the tank arrived at factory #371 again, but this time it was not repaired. Thus ended the career of this tank which could not, for several reasons, replace the KV-1.

Taking the weight of the internals of the KV-3 with 120 mm of armour as the same 24,300 kg, and counting that the ZiS-5 is 300 kg heavier, the KV-3 (120 mm) works out to be 52,801 kg.

I deem the construction of a tank with 120 mm of front armour and a 76 mm ZiS-5 gun that weighs no more than 54-55 tons viable."

The ZiS-5 isn't the gun that went on the KV-1 and KV-1S, but an older index, referring to a 76 mm tank gun with ballistics of the 3-K model 1931 AA gun.

Sadly, these notes do not appear to mention what modification. Another document is provided stating the weight of the Matilda turret to be 3812 kg with the turret ring and 3567 without, with the same figured for the Valentine being 2415 kg and 2210 kg, significantly higher than the ones in the table. However, the latter figures count the gun mantlet, while the former ones presumably do not.

World of Tanks History Section: Object 212

The history of domestic SPGs began in September of 1931. During work on a "self propelled corps triplex", SU-7 and SU-14 SPGs were developed. SU-7 was designed to use a 152 mm gun, 203 mm howitzer, and a 305 mm mortar. The SU-14 was designed to use a 107 mm gun, 152 mm gun, and a 203 mm howitzer. After the arrests of N.N. Magdeisev (designer of the B-4 howitzer) and then P.I. Syachintov, who was in charge of the SU-14 project on August 7th, 1938, the "small triplex" was cancelled.

High powered SPGs came up again in late 1939. While storming the Mannerheim Line, the Red Army needed an SPG with a high caliber gun and at least light anti-shell armour. In the middle of December of 1939, the Kirov factory and factory #185 design bureaus received an order from the Military Council of the North-West Front to develop engineering tanks with anti-shell armour. Factory #185 started two projects at once. Work began on an SPG based on the T-100. Additionally, it was decided to equip the SU-14 with armour. You would assume that the already made SPG was the faster solution, but no, work only competed on March 20th, a week after the end of the Winter War. The creation of an SPG on the T-100 chassis was not fast either, resulting in a vehicle named T-100Y, armed with a 130 mm B-13 naval gun.

The Kirov factory took a different route. In January of 1940, a prototype of the KV heavy tank (serial number U-0) arrived from the front. According to orders from the Military Council of the North-West Front, the first 4 tanks, including U-0, were to be equipped with 152 mm howitzers to defeat pillboxes. An enlarged turret was rapidly developed as a result. Work on the enlarged turret was done by SKB-3, headed by N.V. Kurin. Initially, the 152 mm model 1909/30 howitzer was planned, indexed L-21. In metal, the assault KV was equipped with a shortened M-10 (indexed MT-1). By February 10th, the new U-0 passed gunnery trials, and by February 17th, U-0 and U-1 were sent back to the front. "KV with large turret" tanks first saw battle on February 22nd. By March 3rd, there were 4 tanks of this type on the front lines.

Due to the results of the Winter War, it was decided that the "bunker buster" theme would be continued. During the spring and summer of 1940, the Kirov factory and factory #185 continued designing heavy SPGs on the T-100 and SMK chassis. However, the final fate of these vehicles was decided by the end of June. Based on the results of trials, it was clear that neither tank will be mass produced, since the KV was more protected and weighed less. The "KV with a large turret" was an adequate interim solution for the bunker buster problem.

As mentioned above, the "KV with a large turret" was a temporary answer to the need for a heavy assault SPG. Kurin's tank was a hypertrophied support tank like the artillery BT-7 (frequently called BT-7A, but that index belongs to another tank). The vehicle on the KV chassis (indexed KV-2 in 1941) had the advantage of parts commonality with its base vehicle. However, it had many drawbacks. The chassis allowed for a limited power gun, while the military demanded that the Br-2 gun be used. Due to the limited size of the turret, loading the M-10T was no easy task. The presence of a rotating turret did not mean that the tank could shoot from any angle.

After the SMK and T-100 projects died, efforts were concentrated on the creation of a heavy tank that was a modernized KV. On July 17th, 1940, the Committee of Defense of the Council of People's Commissars issued decree #198ss on the creation of new vehicles on the KV chassis. According to the decree, the Kirov factory was to develop the following:

  • Two experimental KV tanks (T-220) with 100 mm armour. One was to be armed with the F-30 85 mm gun, the other with the F-32 76 mm gun.
  • Two experimental KV tanks with 90 mm armour. One was to be armed with the F-32 76 mm gun, the other with the F-30 85 mm gun.
  • One experimental SPG with a Br-2 152 mm gun. 
The KV with 90 mm of armour received the factory index "150" (GABTU correspondence used the index T-150). It differed from its base vehicle in its 76 mm F-32 gun and a commander's cupola. It was planned that this tank, under the index "KV-3" will replace the KV-1.

The "220" tank was more distinct from the KV-1. The tank had a longer hull; the amount of road wheels increased to 7 on each side. The T-220 had a new turret, which housed the 85 mm F-30 gun. The tank used an 850 hp V-2F (V-10) engine. It was completed on December 5th, 1940.

The technical requirements for the 152 mm SPG were finalized by the end of August of 1940.

The SPG that the Kirov factory was tasked with received the index of "212". The chief engineer for this project was T.N. Golburt. The 212 was reminiscent of the SU-14-1, especially when it came to the layout of the fighting compartment. The chassis was a reworked T-220 suspension, with an engine in the middle and drive wheels at the front. The front also housed the driver's compartment. The fighting compartment was in a large casemate at the rear of the hull. On one hand, this design increased the size of the SPG. On the other, it increased crew comfort. The rear position of the casemate also reduced the distance that the Br-2 stuck out past the vehicle's hull.

2 million roubles were issued to this project. 100,000 went into the development of the technical project, 25,000 to the design of a model, 300,000 on blueprints, 75,000 on blueprint edits, 1.1 million on the production of a prototype, 100,000 on trials, and then 300,000 on repairs. The cost of the armament was not included in this sum.

The first prototype was due on December 1st, 1940, but serious corrections had to be made due to faults found during the design process. According to a GABTU report on experimental works, some components for the 212 were produced by January of 1941. Also, the technical project was completed, and sent to the Izhor factory for the production of a hull. By then, 1.5 million roubles have been spent. Work was going slowly due to higher priority of the T-150 and T-220, as well as other problems.

The hull for the new SPG was received only on March 5th, 1941. According to reports, assembly was stalled due to a lack of ready components. By the spring of 1941, the 212 project was dropping in priority at the Kirov factory. The factory received an urgent order for a heavy tank that inherited the T-150's index of "KV-3". The project, indexed "223", was developed on the T-220 chassis, with a front plate thickened to 120 mm and a new turret for the 107 mm ZiS-6 gun. The mass was estimated at 68 tons. The design of this vehicle began after learning of a new German heavy tank. Due to this load, work on the 212 stalled starting in the second half of March of 1941. April and May reports on experimental work state "No changes" in the row titled "self-propelled gun on the KV chassis". 

After Germany's attack on the USSR, designs were reconsidered. Work on some designs was accelerated. Others, either in the initial stages or not compatible with the realities of modern war, were cancelled. According to the most common version of this story, this was the fate of the 212, but it did not happen quite this way.

According to order #253ss of the People's Commissariat of Heavy Production, the KV-3 was transferred from the Kirov factory to the Chelyabinsk Tractor Factory (ChTZ). Engineers, technologists, and materials were sent to Chelyabinsk. One KV-3 made it to the front, another, without a turret or components, was sent to Chelyabinsk. In February of 1942, this KV-3 was assigned to the experimental OP-2 plant. As for the 212, until the start of August of 1941, it was still at the Kirov plant. Only then was it transferred to the Ural Factory of Heavy Machine Building (UZTM in Sverdlovsk, modern Ekaterinburg). 

Meanwhile tank production had no time for the KV-3, nor a bunker buster on its chassis. The Kirov factory was evacuated to Chelyabinsk and renamed Kirov Factory in Chelyabinsk (ChKZ), and the Izhor factory that made KV armour was sent to Sverdlovsk. UZTM was renamed to Izhor factory, and only got its name back on January 4th, 1942. UZTM was also loaded with Ordzhonikidze factory #37 and Kalinin factory #8 setting on up its territory. Factory #75, which was producing the V-5 engine was moved to Chelyabinsk, and began working on the much more necessary V-2. The situation with 152 mm guns was no better. The last Br-2 was produced by Barricade factory #221 (Stalingrad, modern Volgograd) in 1940.

Bunker busters fell out of priority, but not for long. In November of 1941, work restarted on many prototypes referred to in the SNK report "On self-propelled artillery" from May 27th, 1941. Nearly all of these projects remained in the requirements stage until 1942, there was not even a possibility of a design. Most factories tasked with designing the SPG were either busy with setting up manufacturing in the buildings where they were evacuated to in the summer and fall, or loaded with more urgent requests. Nevertheless, the list of experimental works for 1942 once again included the KV-3, scheduled for completion on May 1st, 1942. The same was true for a "two-stroke 1200 hp diesel engine" (due on October 1st, 1942), "charging the V-2 engine to 1200 hp" (due on July 1st, 1942). In March of 1942, the topic of "152 mm SPG on the KV-3 chassis (bunker buster)" resurfaces. The KV was indicated as its chassis, and the oscillating part of the Br-2 its armament. Factory #100 was listed as responsible for the chassis. Factory #8 was responsible for the gun. 1.5 million roubles was issued for this project. A prototype was expected by July 1st, 1942. However, the KV-3 was dead and buried in spring of 1942, and different vehicles were considered candidates for a bunker buster chassis.

Heavy Trials

In 1940, two tanks were ordered to replace the KV-1: the T-150 (also known as Object 150, KV-3, and 150) and T-220 (also known as KV-220, Object 220, or just 220). The tanks were much heavier than the KV-1, and thus required much more powerful engines.

The commission decided that:
  1. The engines were accepted for field trials too soon.
  2. The engines need factory trials, not field trials.
  3. In order to swiftly complete the engine corrections, transfer the tanks to the intra-factory commission for factory engine trials.
  4. The commission for engine trials should include the BTU engineer in charge of the T-150 and T-220.
Finish the trials before March 10th. The Kirov factory and factory #75 must provide normal conditions for the engines inside the tanks and provide tanks with working engines and cooling systems for field trials by this date."

Looks like they got too hasty. The 850 hp engine didn't get anywhere, but the KV-220 ended up with a V-5 engine turbocharged to 700 hp by April.

In addition to the report from April 20th, 1941, I report the following with respect to completed trials:
  1. By May 4th, 1941, object #220, with additional weight to simulate the weight of a KV-3, endured 967 km worth of trials. Of those, 448 were on a road, and 519 were off-road. The V-5 engine worked for 68 hours and 30 minutes.
  2. During trials, the following failed:
    1. Balancer with idler axle: 6
    2. Lower road wheels: 2.5
    3. Torsion bars: 1
    4. Idlers: 2
  3. In addition to the note from April 20th, the following defects were discovered:
    1. The 2nd and 4th gear pins in the gearbox were sheared off.
    2. The eyelet of the main friction clutch was destroyed.
No defects were found in other components of the transmission during technical inspection.
It is necessary to point out that the off-road conditions were especially difficult, and the V-5 700 hp engine only reached second gear. Third gear is only usable on the road or hard ground.
During trials, the following data was obtained:
  1. Highway fuel efficiency: 2.9-3.2 liters per kilometer"
Sadly, this is the only page of this document that I have, but I think it gets the idea across. Keep in mind that the already portly 62 ton tank was loaded to 70 tons, heavier than any other Soviet tank that was built.

KV-1 vs Tiger

Fans of comparing tanks and counting numbers should be interested in this episode of the Leningrad Front, when elements of the Independent Guards Breakthrough Tank Regiment engaged the 502nd German Heavy Tank Battalion on the Leningrad Front, between July 22nd, 1943 and August 24th, 1943. For those that believe the KV was worthless at that point, prepare to be shocked and amazed.

Part 1 of the first page shows the various dates and how many tanks were available. The first column is the amount of tanks that participated in battle, and the second is how many tanks were available for battle.

Part 2 of the first page shows the accomplishments of the regiment in that time. Total destroyed:
Tiger tanks: 9
PzIII tanks: 2
PzIV tanks: 3
Pillboxes: 39
AT guns: 13
105 mm guns: 4
Mortars: 15
Machine guns: 28
Ammunition depots: 2
Soldiers: about 700

After that, the report gets more in-depth.

"3. 4 Tigers tanks were destroyed with AP shells from 300-400 meters. Five Tiger tanks were destroyed with subcaliber shells. PzIII and PzIV tanks were destroyed with AP shells. Destroyed enemy tanks that were examined by our staff have penetrations in the turret and sides. One tank, knocked out on August 22nd, has a breach next to the driver's hatch made by an armour piercing shell.

4. The regiment lost 44 tanks in combat, out of those:
  • 8 were destroyed by artillery fire
  • 29 were immobilized by artillery and tank fire
  • 7 were immobilized by mines and explosives
5. Co-operation between tanks and artillery was achieved by having a special radio station in the artillery battery dedicated to communicating with the tanks. The tanks had a map of artillery coordinates. Artillery fire was called in by radio. This tactic was effective when deflecting enemy counterattacks. Tanks could call artillery fire in a timely manner. A forward observer was not assigned to the tank regiment, as one was unavailable at the time. The tank crews were responsible for correcting fire."

However, these weren't just simple KVs. Avid readers of my blog may remember the 31st for a certain special tank they were issued. 

Another interesting fact is that even though the Tiger's gun was very capable of destroying a KV, most of the "casualties" were just damage to the suspension. On average, each tank was "knocked out" more than twice (20 tanks vs 44 casualties). However, once you apply German metrics for losses to both sides, the picture becomes completely different: 8 "obsolete" KVs lost, compared to 9 Tigers, and with a nice bonus of 5 lesser German tanks. If you look at the report more closely, the famous Tigers have a pretty abysmal kill ratio: all 8 are credited to anti-tank artillery. 

One final note on Soviet actions in this battle: out of the 44 tanks "destroyed", only six crew members died. That's pretty good survivability, especially if you notice the machine guns and pillboxes that, no doubt, would not let the crewmen evacuate safely.

Now, on to the German side. Thankfully, Schneider reproduces the German combat diaries in Tigers in Combat, so it is not difficult to search for them. Unfortunately, the diary is not as detailed as I would like it to be (there is not even any mention of KV tanks), but it does confirm that the 502nd s.Pz.Abt took a heavy pounding at Leningrad in this time. 44 tanks are in possession of the battalion at the beginning of the period in question, down to 6 towards the end.

T-150 Revival

I have written before about the Object 150, but its final fate was somewhat vague. Here is a document on that records it in more concrete terms.

"KV tanks ## ... T-150 ... and T-28 tanks ## ... should be removed from the inventory of the regiment as non-recoverable losses." This is dated May 4th, 1943. The regiment in question is the 31st Independent Guards Tank Breakthrough Regiment.

However, the loss wasn't as non-recoverable as you might expect.

This is an order of rewarding several drivers with the title of Mechanic-Driver First Class and assigning them to vehicles. All the way on the second page we see our old friend "KV" #T-150, assigned to the same 31st. This document is dated November 18th, 1943. Looks like 6 months is long enough to do the impossible!

Prototype KVs

Despite the superiority of the KV over any other tank in armour and armament in 1940, the Soviet Union did not stop developing heavy tanks. Intelligence about thick armour and high penetrating guns of the potential enemy led to bigger and better tanks being developed.

KV-3 (Objects 150, 221, 222, 223)

The first is the KV-3 (Object 150). Unlike the later tank with that same name, this was essentially a slightly better KV-1, with 90 mm of armour and an improved F-32 gun (early KV-1s had the L-11 gun). The KV-3 also had a commander's cupola. However, the thick armour increased the tank's mass to 51 tons, which was too much for the engine. Regardless, the vehicle passed trials. Only one was built before the war. It was lost in battle defending Leningrad with the 123rd Tank Brigade. This tank is also known as "first KV-3", or T-150.

KV-3 (Object 221) was developed with an 85 mm gun, but was never built. KV-3 (Object 222) with the F-34 76.2 mm gun met the same fate. In 1941, an electromechanical transmission was developed, but never built. KV-3 (Object 223) was the most impressive of the lot, with up to 120 mm of sloped armour, and a 107 mm ZiS-6 gun. It was never built. However, a KV-1 with a lengthened hull was built, and artificially loaded to 70 tons, in order to see if the torsion bar suspension could handle that kind of weight. It could, but the rubber tires would have to be reinforced.

In April of 1941, it was decided that all KV-3s needed 120 mm of armour in the front of their turret and hull.

KV-220 (Object 220)

The KV-220 was another development of the KV-1. It had unsloped turret armour plates, but a roomier turret, and an 85mm F-30 gun. Armour was improved, up to 100 mm. The tank had an improved transmission compared to the KV-1. The prototype were sent to defend Leningrad with the 124th Tank Brigade, re-equipped with a 76 mm F-32 gun. The old turret was used as a part of an artillery battery. The tank was lost in battle, later repaired, and sent to a training unit.

KV-4 (Object 224)

At the same time, another group of engineers was developing the KV-4. The tank would have a 107 mm gun, a 45 mm gun (76.2 mm in one project), and light and heavy machine guns. Some versions were equipped with a flamethrower. The powerful engine would accelerate the KV-4 up to 51 kph, depending on the project. The armour was even greater than that of the KV-3, at up to 180 mm. The mass of the tank was up to 100 tons. Over 20 designs were proposed, some are available at the Russian Wikipedia page. The most interesting ones are Kruchenyh's design (9 crew members, 180 mm of armour, 107.7 tons), Yermolayev's design (51 kph max speed), Shashmurin's design (76 mm gun in the turret, 107 mm gun in the hull), Mihailov's design (50 kph, 180 mm of armour), and Tarapatin's design (107 mm gun turret with limited traverse). KV-5 (Object 225)

The KV-5 projects had the same armament and engine as the KV-4, but even more armour than most of those projects (150-170 mm).  The mass was projected to increase to 100 tons. The project was meant to be finished in October of 1941, but the start of the war interfered. Simplifications to the tank had to be made, such as replacing the stamped turret with a welded one, and a single 1200 hp engine with two 600 hp ones.

The start of the war defined the priorities of KV production.

"By order number 1217-503ss from May 5th, 1941, the production of tanks at the Kirov factory is outlined as follows: the primary tank for 1941 will be the KV-3, and, depending on the trials of the KV-4 and the KV-5, one of these three vehicles for 1942. 
The Chelyabinsk Tractor Factory will keep producing the KV-1 with 75 mm of armour. There is a possibility to, without radically altering the production process, to increase the protection of the tank by increasing the armour to 90 mm. 90 mm thick armour that is hardened by high frequency electric current is equivalent to 100-110 mm of armour. 
An experimental prototype of a KV tank with 90 mm of armour is being developed at the Kirov factory, (order number 1288-495ss) that uses the same configuration as the KV-1, aside from the gun. The factory tests are producing satisfactory results. 
Based on this, it is possible for the Chelyabinsk Tractor Factory to, starting with January 1st 1942, begin producing KV tanks with 90 mm of armour and 76.2 mm model 1940 guns. 
This decision will allow for:
  1. Increasing the second manufacturing base for powerful tanks.
  2. Production of spare parts for existing KV-1 and KV-2 tanks.
Please confirm these developments.

However, as the war went on, it became abundantly clear that heavily armoured tanks were to be replaced with fast ones, and powerful expensive new guns were not needed. The upgraded version of the KV-1, the KV-1S, had less armour, and not more. Later KVs with the numbers 6 through 12 were either KV-1 tanks with modified armament or, in the case of the KV-7, a radically different vehicle.
